INTERVIEW FOR CROSSPOINTE
TP: What type of band are you?
A: Death Metal. Just kidding. J We're a worship band, plain and simple. I guess if I had to put us in a genre, I would say we fall somewhere in that magical land between alternative and acoustic rock.
TP: Tell us a brief history of your band.
A: It's funny because we've always just led worship for the community we found ourselves in. Lance (lead guitar) and myself started leading worship together way back in 1997 at Evangel Temple in the youth program, "Alpha Chi". At that time we were just called "The Alpha Chi Praise Band". After about 4 years we began leading worship for a college group "Veritas". At which point "The Alpha Chi Praise Band" was no longer a cool name, so we dropped it for something a little more original, "The Veritas Band". Then on April 17th, 2005 a group of about 40 people from Evangel Temple and several other communities branched out and started a little redemptive project we like to call CrossPointe Church in Fortson, GA. I don't suppose I need to explain the name change. So I suppose if the pattern continues, in about 50 years we'll be called "The Gardens at Calvary Band."
So we've had this great opportunity to be the worship leaders for our generation in our community, and we've been so incredibly blessed. Band members have come and gone and then come back again. The question is often not "Who plays in the band?" but "Who hasn't played in the band?" But we all love it and there is nothing else we'd rather do.
TP: Who are your musical influences?
A: Shane and Shane are the big ones, without a doubt. Along with some of the other great worship bands, David Crowder, Phil Wickham, Chris Tomlin, just to name a few. Jonathan and Lisa's new stuff is pretty awesome as well. We've found ourselves lately really drawn to the depth of traditional worship hymns. There is so much substance in songs like "I stand amazed" and "It is well with my soul" that we can't help but go back and try to breathe new life into them, to the point that we've really become a blend of old and new.
TP: What inspires Crosspointe to do what you do?
A: We really just love Jesus and we're amazed by who he is and what he's done. Praise and worship is just the overflow of that love and God is graciously allowing us to lead his tribe in expressing that love to him.
TP: What are some pet peeves?
A: We're not big fans of preachers that get people to repeat them. E.g. ("Jesus paid it all, someone tell the person next to them that "Jesus paid it all"). We have no real basis for that; we just think it's weird. We don't like prayer banners and we will NEVER EVER play "The Happy Song" or "Enemy's Camp", good songs, just not for us. Booty dancing = worst thing ever invented. Can't stand really bad drivers. I like Joel Olsteen but something about a book called "12 steps to highly effective living" makes me feel like a moron because in 24 years I haven't figured out the 12 steps plus I think it sort of trivializes the complexity of life.
TP: Favorite scripture and why?
A: Acts 17:27 "His purpose in all this was that nations should seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him-though he is not far from any one of us. We love this verse because it lets us know that God wants to be known, he desires to be found by us. Worship is not some magical formula where if we play just the right song in just the key, and cant our head and raise our hands at just the right time the Holy Spirit will come and sprinkle some pixie dust on us. No, the One that put everything together did it so that we would seek and find him. So when we worship, it's not a matter of God showing up, because the whole earth is filled with his glory, instead it's often times a matter of us showing up.
